OTTAWA, Ontario, May 17, 2019–Jill Irving rode Arthur to a personal best score to win the CDI3* Grand Prix Friday as Canada’s top combinations vie for a place on the team for the Pan American Games two months away.
Jill and the 14-year-old Dutch gelding scored 72.435% for the win, the first Grand Prix score above 70% since starting Big Tour in February 2017. Jill is at the top of Canada’s Pan Am Big Tour standings on Degas that she competed on her nation’s team at the World Equestrian Games in Tryon last fall.
Megan Lane on Zodiac MW that she competed at the 2018 WEG placed second on 70.543% with Yvonne Losos de Muñiz of the Dominican Republic on Foco Loco W third on 70.130%.
The Games scheduled for Lima, Peru at the end of July are critical for Canada as the country needs to place in the top two–not including the U.S. that is already qualified–to earn a start at the Olympics in Tokyo in 2020.
Pan Am teams of four Big and Small Tour riders and horses must include at least one Grand Prix combination to qualify for Tokyo.
Canada has not announced the makeup of its team. Big Tour combinations will get bonus points at Lima, but the country has a strong lineup of Small Tour partnerships.
