Dressage Horse for Sale: Selecting The One
Dressage Horse for Sale: Selecting The One
Having been involved with many dressage horses for sale and their eventual sale to a wide variety of people, I have learned that there are some keys to finding the right dressage horse for sale.
When looking for a dressage horse for sale, many people start the process with an unrealistic view of the entire situation. If you are currently riding a horse at training level, buying a Grand Prix dressage horse for sale is not going to make you a Grand Prix rider over night. In fact, your transition to the more highly schooled horse may be very, very frustrating. It is important to understand, especially for the first test ride, that you most likely will have some communication problems with the horse. This is normal. It is not your fault nor does it mean that the horse has been trained improperly. With a little bit of time, bonding, and training, you will be able to overcome any differences you have in commands and riding style. Then you will be able to go on and learn everything the horse has to teach you. Also be realistic about your physical limitations. It is popular to have a large dressage horse. And they do have an imposing presence in the arena. However, if you are short, you are not going to be able to effectively ride the horse. So, be honest.
Tell the person in charge of offering the dressage horse for sale that you are short and looking for a horse that is the proper size for you.
We all know about the wonderful success of Debbie McDonald and Brentina despite their odd size pairing. Most people will not be able to duplicate this and you will only cause yourself expense, frustration, and anger at the horse if you try.
Before you buy a dressage horse for sale, you need to educate yourself as much as possible on the dressage horse for sale you are buying. Don’t be afraid to ask the seller questions about the personality and daily habits of the dressage horse for sale. It is important for you and the horse to be able to mesh together. If you love giving the horse attention and the dressage horse for sale is more of an aloof personality, it is probably going to be a disappointment. If your barn has limited turnout and you are looking at a dressage horse for sale that requires all day turnout to maintain its sanity, you will either need to look for a new barn or find another dressage horse for sale. Create your list of questions before you contact the seller. You may have some additional questions come up after you learn more about the dressage horse for sale.
Make sure the dressage horse for sale is sound physically and mentally. A thorough pre purchase exam cannot be over looked. Make sure to use a vet that is different than the normal vet that sees the dressage horse for sale. Include x-rays and blood tests. If you need to, contact the veterinary college of your choice and send the x-rays to them to review.
